Untitled (I)

She rings up to tell of a new boyfriend
This being her seventh phone call this week
His greatness: The only thing she can speak
And it doesn’t seem clear when it will end
Apparently they do much together
Go shopping, buy gifts, do lunch, take photos
Introducing her friends, watch TV shows
Has he let her down completely? Never
Making very clear this good thing she’s got
He fills her up with happiness so true
With him she does things that we used to do
This I’m told whether I like it or not

I’m happy for you that you’re doing well
But can’t you find somebody else to tell?

Early Morning Departure

Woke up at 4am but she did not
Got clothes and shoes on just like it was planned
A kiss on the cheek. A squeeze of her hand
For I will be missing her a whole lot
Sitting in a dark room on a suitcase
An airline ticket in hand, held tightly
Phone rings. Head outside and into taxi
As I’m driven away leaving no trace
As I journey I think of her, so fair
No doubt she is still sleeping peacefully
What will she do this weekend without me?
What will she do when she finds I’m not there?

But no matter the distance love won’t wane
And I know we will be together again

I feel better now

And suddenly it’s clear and it’s all true
Look at me: I’ve reason to be happy
Because I’m heading off for some place new
For I’ve had a moment of clarity
In amongst the confusion I found out
This thing called life: it’s one big joke you see
All the disasters? The failures? The doubt?
Don’t argue: Just follow it completely
The attempts made to progress aren’t worth it
So it shouldn’t be a concern for me
So goodbye those I know: You did jack shit
Now watch as I discard all sanity

So towards chaos I open the door
Is it worth it? I don’t care any more

The lament of a conscience

My friend has made a terrible mistake
I tried to warn him but he wouldn’t heed
I gave him the good advice he would need
But stupid moves he continues to make
I do my job but he just doesn’t care
Why speak? He won’t hear a damn word I say
I want to see him heading in the right way
But he keeps forgetting I’m always there
Why do I bother hanging around him?
I stuck with him! This is the thanks I get!
I’m treated with the same hate as a debt!
Well stuff it then: I’m handing my badge in

To make mistakes. So my friend you are free
Only this time it will be without me

The Voice you Refuse to hear

Right beside you with every step taken
No matter where you go it’s coming too
Don’t like it? Well there’s nothing you can do
Ignore? You can try but you’re mistaken

Each and every thing you do it will see
All the good, all the bad, every action
It will note words said, each interaction
But it won’t tell you where you need to be

It will see thieving, the times you’re untrue
The people you hurt, the cruel words you say
It won’t speak out but it won’t go away
Because all it wants is what’s best for you

Unseen, it will be with you everywhere
And when the darkness calls it will be there

Man's Best Friend

Within the eyes love unconditional
A face that doesn’t deserve any harm
The hardest heart, a nature to disarm
A motivation unquestionable
A friend who will never leave you alone
Who will love you more than you love yourself
Greater than you’ll know; Providing a wealth
From day of birth it’s all it’s ever known
True definition of friend to the end
No matter where you go; will walk with you
And will go with everything that you do
You; and much very prepared to defend

Still your best friend when no one else will be
For it’s not a complete jerk that they see

Four Old Men

Four old men were working in an office
Still doing the same job five decades on
Working with numbers, profits and losses
But the conclusion is still one foregone

Four men still talk of plans they had coming
As the computers and desks grow dusty
The business continues to keep running
Riding on skills slowly getting rusty

Four men still greet each other come morning
Any hopes, ambitions have all decayed
Where once run is now reduced to crawling
So may as well keep going ‘til they fade

Four old men working for a goal long gone
As the rest of the world keeps moving on

Reaper Man

Sitting on park bench, watching the people
Watching the world pass behind pitch black shades
His hair grey and his face wracked by decades
He sits so still, not moving a muscle
He twirls the top of a cane in his hand
Says no words – as silent as a dead star
And boots that look like they’ve been travelling far
Seems unconcerned with what time may demand
Dressed entirely in blackest of leathers
Is he waiting for someone to walk by?
Somehow it maybe best not to ask why
Says no words for he’s the one who measures

Watching the people pass, he sits and waits
For its he himself that decides the fates

God mightn’t love you but Science does

Science is your friend! It loves you so much!
It wants naught but only the best for you!
It don’t care about what you want to do
We’re just the puppets that dance to its touch
Your genes tell you how it’s going to be
They don’t care about what plans you have made
Don’t like the path that’s already been laid?
Well too bad: You’re stuck with it now buddy
You will also need a tribe to call home
You will hang around them and only them
Just don’t mingle – Everyone will condemn
Or you run the risk of being alone

But don’t complain: Science is a friend true
It wants naught but only the best for you

Its only love

A sunset’s been painted across the sky
Together on the edge of a clear lake
With a picnic basket holding wine, cake
As a summer evening breeze drifts on by

Dressed in a white shirt and a waistcoat red
Whilst she’s wearing a dress of deep blue
Seeing a truth only we know is true
The chink of wine glasses chime with words said

Her hand rests on mine. Warm is the touch
Leaning in, her head resting on my shoulder
Feeling a bond stronger than a boulder
And love for each other that burns so much

Another prefect day ends spent with her
For an evening together I confer

Death of a Dream

Today's the day the dream cracked wide open
Just stand there and watch it collapse and burn
The endpoint of years spent fighting, hoping
Trade it for an irrevocable turn
Why did it go wrong? You were doing well
Could say there’ll be next time but it’s not true
Walked like a giant. Devastatingly fell
And the world’s been warped into something new
What do you do when the world has fallen?
What do you do when there’s nothing to clasp?
Has destiny decreed to stop calling?
When the victory slipped and fell from grasp?

There anything left worthy to obtain?
Is it worth starting all over again?

Sunday Lunch

A sky of clearest blue. No cloud in sight
A house fifty miles from anywhere
A backyard looking deserted and bare
A green garden lit up by the sun’s light

By several cars, a driveway occupied
But there’s no sign of life that can be found
That can be heard. Because the only sound
Comes drifting in from the building’s inside

Chinks of both wine glasses and cutlery
A mixture of voices both young and old
Jokes being cracked and stories being told
Away from the world a good company

All thoughts of tomorrow have gone away
For now is the time to enjoy the day

Thor goes to war

With the thunderbolts still at beck and call
An ancient force advances, proud and strong
Warrior. Guardian. King of his throng
Fought a thousand battles. Never did fall
To the undefeated a challenge comes
War calls: Now’s not the time to turn away
Voices of millennia guide his way
Each step to the sound of a thousand drums
Of fierce of Valkyries at his back; A score
The grip on the hammer strong as ever
The power of thunder ceasing never
Could be the last but it has been before

Having stood tall over the blood and slime
He picks up the hammer for one more time

The Old Man and the TV

It’s been one year into retirement
And one year of finding things to be done
The plans he’d made have already been spent
And suddenly there’s no roads left to run
Turn on the TV for nothing to do
What could be on? Does it even matter?
Take a seat. Move? Why bother trying to
Turn off the brain. Submit to the chatter
Enjoying when there’s not much to enjoy
Insisting its enjoyable when it’s not
Turn it off? Too much effort to employ
Relax for the motivation’s been shot

At sixty: Your new best friend: The TV
Naught to do but welcome senility

Ever felt like you’ve been cheated?

Being led on by promises empty
Debts facing no plans of being repaid
Being asked to hand over a sucker’s fee
Relying solely on a false trust made
Investing cash in a goal not alive
Putting in effort for little return
Waiting patiently though it won’t arrive
Realising you don’t have money to burn
What made you think it would work out this time
From one can recover; Not a blunder
From common sense why did you cross the line?
Why’d you bother? One can only wonder

So what is there to do when it’s all gone?
For one, you stand up and keep moving on

Born This Way

I may not grasp situations social
But I take pride in being different
I may have trouble in being vocal
But in my field I’m genius ascent
I may not work the best within a group
But I will not abandon my self-worth
I may struggle to remain in the loop
But I work harder than anyone on Earth
“He’s a weirdo”; “He’s strange’ people may say
But none of that matters at all you see
Because I’m a success in my own way
For it is an Aspie that I should be

And this is all me – A me that is true
I can’t change even if I wanted to

Melbourne Woman

Meeting at the station in Flinders Street
Where folk gather, clocks tell time and trains stop
Take a horse drawn carriage on cushioned seat
Tour the streets to the sound of the clip-clop
Walking hand in hand underneath skies grey
Rugged up in warm gear but still there’s shiver
Sharing sushi on a winters day
On a bench facing the Yarra River
Eating dinner at the Crown Casino
Taking a stroll along the Burke St mall
Take a tram – so many places to go
From Richmond, to Collingwood and Westall

The weather may be shocking but why care?
For a day in Melbourne is one to share

Tonight is just for us

Close the door and let in all the shadows
You. Me. Forget about the outside world
It’s within these arms that you should be held
Come to where a deep burning passion flows
Wrapped up in an embrace warm and lovely
But it’s different from last time: It feels true
If you’re so bold to show me the real you
Then I will gladly show you the real me
As bare skin touches passion runs white hot
Two pairs of lips can’t be kissed fast enough
No secrets any more. Nothing to bluff
Claim my love for you – of which there’s a lot

So much emotion burns bright in the gloom
And a flower has burst into full bloom

Forever Broke

Seeing the same four walls from yesterday
One day with money for thirteen without
Will never happen again you did say
And yet there’s no end in sight for this drought

The car engine is running on empty
Can’t afford bus fare, new shoes or a snack
Saving? If only it were that easy
For every step forward there’s ten more back

Too little supply for too much demand
All for something that can’t be provided
Running on a path uncertain, unplanned
Why did you bother getting out of bed

And another day’s spent losing this game
And what’s on tomorrow? More of the same

Flying

Getting ready to step up from the ground
Leaving the earth for territory unknown
For a new frontier forever been shown
It’s always been there – just needs to be found

Rise and head into the great wide open
Pushing the boundaries of where you don’t go
Where the destination is you just know
With this step the journey’s set in motion

No more chains or restrictions – now walk free
This journey’s history in the making
It’s a new world ready for the taking
What’s over the next hill? Let’s go and see

The rules have been broken, the walls tumbled
Walking proudly forward where once stumbled
