Boys Will Be Boys

Look at him: he’s trying to get a wife
He sees the challenge. He’s ready to fight
He doesn’t want to lead a lonely life
Couldn’t get more pathetic, am I right?
He has a job, a car, a money pool
Because he was told to get them – such lies
Does he know desire’s not negotiable?
His pleas for help are met with vague replies
He can’t escape this prison, He’s stuck bad
He’s got to prove himself: no mistaking
He’ll do anything to stop feeling sad
But he’s just a rapist in the making

He’s on a futile quest, his prospects grim
It sure makes me happy that I’m not him

The View from the Friend Zone

I would like to raise my glass to a toast
To the potential left unrealised
To when one’s courage was cut down to size
To those who know which feelings hurt the most
To those who know what others just won’t see
To those who play by the rules and don’t win
To those who knock but are never let in
To those who be what they can never be
To the beautiful flowers that don’t sprout
To progress locked in a permanent halt
To the effort that yielded no result
And to the prison that has no way out

So here’s to a pursuit blind, deaf and dumb
And vindication that will never come

Four Old Men

Four old men were working in an office
Still doing the same job five decades on
Working with numbers, profits and losses
But the conclusion is still one foregone

Four men still talk of plans they had coming
As the computers and desks grow dusty
The business continues to keep running
Riding on skills slowly getting rusty

Four men still greet each other come morning
Any hopes, ambitions have all decayed
Where once run is now reduced to crawling
So may as well keep going ‘til they fade

Four old men working for a goal long gone
As the rest of the world keeps moving on

The Old Man and the TV

It’s been one year into retirement
And one year of finding things to be done
The plans he’d made have already been spent
And suddenly there’s no roads left to run
Turn on the TV for nothing to do
What could be on? Does it even matter?
Take a seat. Move? Why bother trying to
Turn off the brain. Submit to the chatter
Enjoying when there’s not much to enjoy
Insisting its enjoyable when it’s not
Turn it off? Too much effort to employ
Relax for the motivation’s been shot

At sixty: Your new best friend: The TV
Naught to do but welcome senility

A Ghost

Her feet carried her down an empty street.
One she’d known from a time long ago
Her blank face told of a goal incomplete
But she was alone. None wanted to know
She looked up as she passed by my window
Empty eyes locking in for a stone gaze
But still they struck a wicked, painful blow
And long forgotten memories did raise
She knew me – but I had no time for her ways
She wanted to know – I walked to my doom
She offered hope but I left it ablaze
And still the empty eyes accuse. They fume.

Weight upon conscience and won’t go away
And tomorrow she will be back this way

The Day You Went Away

This morning the sky was gone: Just clouds grey
These empty rooms of silence greet the dawn
Can’t think of anything to do today
As the suitcases in the hall are gone
Breakfast is dull and the TV boring
Go outside – for nothing better to do
Leaving the flat and into rain pouring
And with no destination to pursue
These soaked city streets are cold and empty
No one else was dumb enough to step out
There’s nothing to do and nothing to see
And the rain won’t satisfy this drought

Left behind, broken heart and worried brow
So then: What are you going to do now?

Emerald

I have a dream lover – oh yes I do
She has a beauty that is stunning
Whenever she cries I come a-running
In my heart I know these feelings are true
In a dark world she is a shining light
She has a gorgeous smile on her face
With her words she makes my jaded heart race
The thought of her keeps me warm through the night
I so want for us to be together
She’s always in my heart, on my mind
But reality can be so unkind
For good reason it can’t be forever

So she must remain out of reach, I fear
Because my wife wouldn’t like that idea

Old Dog

Was my bedroom floor comfy to sleep on?
Did you enjoy keeping me company?
Did you love the pats and the hugs from me?
Did you love all those you set eyes upon?
Did the bones I gave you keep you well fed?
Did you love the walks however they came?
Even those times we got caught in the rain?
Did you understand every word I said?
Did I do much more than the best I could?
Was love never something you had to learn?
Was seeing me sad enough for concern?
Did you still love me when no one else would?

Did you enjoy those places we went to?
Did my worthless life mean something to you?

The wife left behind

Locked away, from the world, in a sleep
Dreams of when the ring was on the finger
Along with the memories that linger
For they’ve taken root in the soul so deep

Thoughts of the one who’s waiting a return
But the hopes of one are looking slimmer
And the love that once stood strong grows dimmer
A soul without its mate: cause for concern

Thoughts of the tenderness that was once there
Understanding between one another
How nobody else could know each other
No sense to turn away from that so rare

The sleep continues, the dreams here to stay
And he will see her face again some day

Open Heart Surgery

The human heart went into hospital
It’s twenty ninth visit this year alone
A thousand feelings had taken its toll
And the damage left the human heart prone
It could think of each time it fell apart
The times when it spoke with all it’s feeling
Without reason; Those who had to depart
The times when rejection left it reeling
The times when it’s emotions made it sick
When it couldn’t find hearts to relate to
When it got hit with the force of a brick
When it couldn’t reach the triumph so true

Now the heart was trying to stay alive
But how can something so fragile survive?

I lost my girlfriend to Jesus Christ

It’s all over – Nothing to do or say
Gone is my job of making her happy
Getting back together – is there a way?
Could think about it but it might kill me
A million miles away is her face
Going ahead with her wonderful life
And, for me there’s no longer a place
And that thought alone cuts deep like a knife
Could say something but I don’t feel like it
Just hope she feels warm in her sleep tonight
I thought this one would work – and be legit
But yet again, the dream has taken flight
There’s nothing to do: I’ve done all I can
And thus I’ve lost out to a better man

Pass the Prozac

The happy pills drive away the abyss
But doesn’t keep it away forever
The pills don’t hit their target: They just miss
I can’t win - And nothing’s getting better
The happy pills just aren’t doing their job
They’re making things worse: They increase my frown
Feelings of catastrophe sparks a sob
Into a sea of black. Prepared to drown
Once cheerful memories are now hazy
Familiar faces have now vaporised
I just hope they are all thinking of me
As on this endless losing streak I ride

Better off dead – The realisation hit
Heavens falling down taking me with it

Women are evil

I have been called many things in my time
A pig, a bastard, a prick, a liar
I must stay down – I’m not allowed to climb
Cos’ occupied is the chair much higher
Must not show any signs of a weakness
Don’t want to risk it being exploited
Putting emotions on line is senseless
It just sets me up for being destroyed
Can’t speak because it will ruin the plan
And leave me getting trampled down upon
Just gotta get a car and cash in hand
To achieve worthiness of attention

So I fall on my knees in submission
It’s a woman’s world in which we live in

Stranded in the Streets of Melbourne

Lost in the hustle of the Buck Street mall
With no direction and no privilege
My passport’s just paper - No good at all
There’s no way out. Better learn the language
Underneath a palm tree in St. Kilda
The position I wanted has been lost
All letters have gone up like a cinder
I was told of jobs but not of the cost
Somewhere near the foot of Mt. Dandenong
Those I thought were friends have left me alone
This plan of mine has gone completely wrong
While someone’s making lots of cash back home

Thus there is no success of which to say
Took the wrong path and got lost on the way

I am an amorous man

You’ve got the most beautiful voice I’ve heard
Even when you refuse to catch a clue
When all hope is lost, I’ll still stand by you
Even when everyone thinks it’s absurd
Your face urges me to be my most kind
Even when my hard efforts are ignored
I’ll keep letting you know that you’re adored
Even when it’s to my heart that you’re blind
I will stick up for you when you need it
Even when what you are doing is wrong
And my loyalty will keep standing strong
Even when you keep treating me like shit

Even though you say how I treat you well
For your heart, I don’t have a hope in hell

Her Wedding Day

A whole page has been torn out of her book
The mind is wandering out of boredom
They say today’s one of celebration
But the doves in my tree have turned to rooks
Walking down that road so proud and so tall
Under a sky holding no clouds of rain
Is the beauty I knew well still the same?
Maybe - but the pain hasn’t changed at all
Word of the event will soon reach my lair
But the records won’t note the truth I know
If she wants to see me, she would say so
But the phone’s not ringing nor do I care

I’ve forgotten all about her you see
Just as she’s forgotten all about me

Are you ready to be heartbroken?

I am in love with a woman so fair
She stayed with me when everyone else ran
Green eyes, marble skin, big smile, black hair
She appreciates me for who I am
But it’s her face I’m not allowed to touch
I can’t make my love for her crystal clear
Her heart won’t know how I love her so much
Cos’ her boyfriend wouldn’t like that idea
And so the love remains unrequited
What choice do I have? I can’t intervene
I just want her to be happy – not sad
So they will kiss whilst I can only dream

Love is placing one’s joy before your own
Even if it means being all alone

Spike’s lament on being single no. 5842684122

The hands crave human touch but there is none
The soul needs feeling but there is a hole
As the eyes can’t see that which is the one
Downhill all sense of hope begins to roll
The voice wants to say words but there’s no ears
The heart is empty but there’s no filling
The need to state these concerns is met with jeers
No other is ready to be willing
The mind is told that love is all around
The lips therefore asks “Why not around here?”
The goal keeps on refusing to be found
As the desolation becomes so clear

Spare me the reassurance you’re sending
As far as I know, the world is ending

Miss Clare remembered

I should have your hand being held in mine
I should have your voice whispering softly
I should have your skin - smooth, pale and so fine
I should have your love pouring onto me
I should have your golden hair in my touch
I should have your beautiful smiling face
I should have your love. I need it so much
I should have your light within this dark place
I should have your heart in embrace baby
I should have your sweet red lips and their taste
I should have your affection. Do you see?
I should have your love. Mine’s going to waste

But I only have your face in my dreams
As well as the thought of what could have been

No Good

It’s true: I am just no good any more
I’ve now become a worthless piece of scrap
There’s nothing I can use to fill the gap
And who wants to listen when you’re a bore?
Can someone save me from my misery?
The role I was made for is now crumbling
And I don’t know what I should be doing
And all my dreams have flown away from me
I want to take my place on this planet
I want to live this short life as I choose
But who wants to be your friend when you lose?
And how far can one fall when there’s no net?

Who wants to hear all about a loser?
Who failed his task to find an answer?
