Vulnerable

This is me at my most vulnerable.

Unvarnished. No strings attached. Pure and still.

I don’t show this readily. I’m no fool.

Just don’t shatter it: I know others will.

I know some will see this as a weakness

They may laugh, hurt, condemn, exploit, cat-call

They will tell me that silence is painless

But for you the walls around me will fall

Feel an honesty no one else will know

See what all the layers are concealing.

Touch all the emotions I wish to show

See the me I am, to you, revealing

Show me your real, honest, self this one time

Do it for me and I will show you mine

Hurt Feelings

Look at that loser: He’s got hurt feelings

His seat to Sucker-ville is well reserved

Been faced with a truth that left him reeling

But just as well: he got what he deserved

He will go home with his world view shaken

He will look in the mirror and condemn

He will face problems that will awaken

But such a struggle is not our problem

His pain is nothing compared to our own

What would he know about what we’ve been through?

We don’t need his help: We will stand alone

We won’t listen when he has a breakthrough

He’s not like us: We are human. We’re strong

That he has hurt feelings proves he’s just wrong

Crazy

What on earth did I do to get noticed?

I’m not used to set one’s feelings alight

What did you see that made you so focused?

This attraction: Got to be a joke right?

Exactly what were the words that were said

That suddenly made me quite appealing?

Many walked off. What made you turn your head?

Where’d you find emotions so revealing?

These words uttered have a familiar sound

Words that may have been uttered from this mouth

With dark memories of past travelled ground

And situations that went way down south

This case has happened many times before

And it’s a truth that shakes me to my core

Death of a Child

This morning’s sun is one you’ll never see

For it is something you will never know

As there is no you, there is only me

All I can do is wonder how you’d go

My flesh and blood, my progeny, my child

To the world, would you’ve had something to show?

Would you be quiet, well-behaved or wild?

Polite and boring or a rebel, crass?

Would you make friends easy or be reviled?

What could have been the skills that you’d amass?

Would you get good marks or repeat a grade?

Would you join the art class or the sports class?

Would you bond with your cousins, loved and played?

Would you live a life boring or intense?

Would you make the same mistakes that I made?

Would you get along with your grandparents?

Would you admire them or think them absurd?

Would your potential be small or immense?

How would you speak? What would be your first word?

Would you have had my eyes? My thought patterns?

Would you’ve forged your own path or joined my herd?

Would you have looked to me like a lantern?

Would I’ve lived up to the title of ‘Dad’?

Would I know what to do when strife happens?

Would I have made you happy, proud or sad?

Would your mistakes be worthy to forgive?

Would you see me when I’m struggling so bad?

Would our bond be loving or combative?

But the life you’d lived is speculation

For the gift of life isn’t mine to give
